How Many Days Do You Need in Yogyakarta? Simple 1, 2 and 3-Day Itineraries

Travel Tips Published 30 October 2026 ARIEF AULIA 10

Short on time? Here is how many days you really need in Yogyakarta, with easy 1, 2 and 3-day plans covering temples, the palace, food and countryside.

Quick answer

2 days is the minimum. 3 days is the sweet spot. 1 day works only if you pick your priorities. Here is why, and what to do with each.

At a glance

  • 1 day: one big temple plus a taste of the city.
  • 2 days: both major temples, the palace and local food.
  • 3 days: all of the above, plus the countryside and a hands-on local experience.
  • 4+ days: add other parts of Java, such as volcanoes and beaches.

If you have 1 day

You cannot see everything, so choose one of these:

Option A: The temple day

  • Early morning: Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple.
  • Late afternoon: Prambanan, the Hindu temple complex, with softer light.
  • Evening: dinner near Malioboro.

Option B: The city day

  • Morning: the Sultan's Palace (Kraton) and the Taman Sari water castle.
  • Afternoon: street food and a stroll around the old town.
  • Evening: Malioboro Street.

Heads up: Borobudur is about 1.5 hours from the city by road, so a temple day is long. Start early.

If you have 2 days

Day 1: Borobudur and countryside

  • Borobudur in the morning, before it gets hot and crowded.
  • A village or countryside stop on the way back.
  • Dinner in the city.

Day 2: Prambanan and the city

  • Prambanan in the morning.
  • Lunch of local dishes, then the Kraton and Taman Sari.
  • Sunset and street food on Malioboro.

If you have 3 days (our recommendation)

Days 1 and 2 are the same as above. Day 3 is where Yogyakarta gets personal. Pick one:

  • Food and craft: a coffee and chocolate workshop in Bantul, then the silver workshops of Kotagede.
  • Nature: a Mount Merapi morning trip.
  • Slow Java: the Menoreh Hills, waterfalls and rice fields of Kulon Progo.

This is the day travelers remember most, because it feels like real Java, not a checklist.

If you have 4 days or more

  • Add a beach day on the south coast.
  • Add the cave and river adventures around the province.
  • Extend to other parts of Java. Allow extra days, since distances are long.

Quick tips that save your day

  • Start early. Mornings are cooler and quieter at the temples.
  • Dress modestly. Cover shoulders and knees at temples and the palace.
  • Check opening hours. The palace has short opening hours, so go in the morning.
  • Check Borobudur rules. Entry and ticket conditions change from time to time, so confirm before you go.
  • Carry some cash. Small food stalls and markets often do not take cards.
  • Plan one slow hour. A coffee stop or a village walk keeps the day enjoyable, not exhausting.

Our honest advice

Give Yogyakarta 3 days. Two days to see the famous sights, and one day to feel the place.
