Yogyakarta Private Car Charter with English-Speaking Driver: How It Works and a Sample Day

Travel Tips Published 30 October 2026 ARIEF AULIA 15

A private car with an English-speaking driver is the easiest way to see Borobudur, Prambanan and the city in one day. Here is how it works, with sample plans.

Yogyakarta has more to see than one day allows: giant temples, a living palace, water gardens and craft villages. The question most first-time visitors ask is simple: how do I get around without stress? This guide explains one popular answer, a private car charter with an English-speaking driver, and helps you decide if it fits your trip.

Quick answer

A private charter means one car, one driver, only your group, for 5 or 10 hours. You choose the stops and the pace. It is the easiest way to see far-apart sights, like Borobudur and Prambanan, in a single day.

At a glance

  • Format: 5-hour or 10-hour private charter, flexible route.
  • Included: hotel pickup and drop-off, air-conditioned private vehicle, English-speaking driver, fuel.
  • Not included: entrance tickets, meals, parking fees and tips.
  • Extra time: IDR 100,000 per hour.
  • Airport pickup: IDR 300,000 per group, one way.
  • Price: ask us for a quote based on your dates and group size.

Is a private charter right for you?

It works well if you

  • Travel as a couple, family or small group and want your own space.
  • Have only one or two days and want to see a lot.
  • Dislike negotiating fares or waiting for rides in the heat.
  • Want a driver who can answer questions in English.
  • Need flexibility, such as an extra photo stop or a rest for kids.

It may not be the best choice if you

  • Travel solo on a very tight budget. Ride apps and the airport train can be cheaper for short city trips.
  • Only plan to stay in the city center, where you can walk or use ride apps.

We would rather you pick what suits your trip than book something you do not need.

Sample plan: 5 hours

Five hours includes driving time, so choose one main goal.

Option A: Borobudur focus

  • Pickup early in the morning.
  • Drive to Borobudur, about 1 to 1.5 hours each way.
  • Visit the temple at a relaxed pace, then return to your hotel.

Option B: Prambanan and city highlights

  • Prambanan temple complex in the morning, when it is cooler.
  • A short stop at a batik or silver workshop, only if you like.
  • Drop-off near Malioboro or your hotel.

Sample plan: 10 hours

This is our most popular option because it fits the big sights comfortably.

  • Early morning: pickup and drive to Borobudur, before the heat and the crowds.
  • Late morning: back toward the city for a local lunch.
  • Afternoon: Prambanan in softer light.
  • Late afternoon: a craft stop, such as silver in Kotagede or batik, or a relaxed coffee break.
  • Evening: drop-off at your hotel.

Prefer the palace? The Sultan's Palace (Kraton) and the Taman Sari Water Castle sit close together and are best in the morning. We can swap them in. Just tell us your priorities.

Tips for a temple day

  • Start early. Mornings are cooler and quieter.
  • Dress modestly. Cover shoulders and knees. Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Bring water, sunscreen and a hat.
  • Carry some cash for tickets, parking, snacks and small shops.
  • Check Borobudur's current rules before you go. Visitor numbers on the upper levels and ticket conditions have changed in the past.

Common worries, answered

"Will I be taken to shops I don't want?"

You decide. Craft stops are optional. If you only want temples, say so and that is the plan.

"What about scams?"

The most common ones in Yogyakarta are people saying a place is "closed today" and steering you elsewhere, and unmetered taxis with inflated prices. With a pre-arranged driver and a clear price, you skip both.

"Can we change the plan on the day?"

Yes. The route is flexible. Want more time at a temple, or to skip a stop? Just tell your driver.

"What if we need more time?"

Extra time is IDR 100,000 per hour, agreed in advance with your driver.

How to book

  • Message us your dates, group size and top sights.
  • We suggest a route and confirm the price.
  • Your driver meets you at your hotel or the airport.

Booking a few days ahead is wise, especially in the busy months of July and August and around holidays.
