From YIA Airport to Yogyakarta City: Train, Taxi, Bus and Your Best Options (2026 Guide)

Travel Tips Published 28 October 2026 ARIEF AULIA 2

Just landed at YIA and wondering how to reach Yogyakarta city? Distance, travel time, prices and the easiest way in, explained by a local guide.

Landing at Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) is easy. Getting from the airport into the city takes a little planning, because YIA is not in Yogyakarta city itself. It is in Kulon Progo, on the western side of the province. Here is a simple guide to your options, from a local guide who has met many travelers at this exact moment.

How far is YIA from the city?

The airport is about 40 to 45 kilometers from central Yogyakarta and Malioboro. By road, expect roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, and longer in heavy traffic. That is farther than many first-time visitors expect, so choose your transport before you land.

Option 1: Airport train (our recommendation)

For most travelers, the train is the best choice: no traffic, a fixed schedule and a fair price. The service is called KAI Bandara YIA, and it runs between the airport station and Yogyakarta Tugu Station, which is a short walk from Malioboro.

  • Xpress: a direct train with no stops, about 35 minutes. Fares start at around Rp 50,000 (roughly €3).
  • Regular: stops at Wates station, so it takes a bit longer, and costs around Rp 20,000 (roughly €1).
  • Tickets: buy online or at the station machines. Schedules and fares were adjusted in July 2026, so always check the official page: KAI Bandara (Railink) official website.

Good to know: the last trains leave in the evening. If your flight lands late, check the timetable first, because you may need a taxi instead.

Option 2: Airport taxi

Taxis are available right at the airport, and they are the easiest option if you arrive late, travel with heavy luggage or want to go straight to your hotel door.

  • Price: roughly Rp 180,000 to 250,000 (about €10 to €14) to the city center, depending on destination.
  • Time: about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  • Tip: use the official taxi counter in the arrival hall. If someone in the hall offers you a "special price" that sounds far too high, politely decline and walk to the counter.

Option 3: DAMRI airport bus

The DAMRI bus is the budget option. It has space for luggage and connects the airport with several points in the city, including the Malioboro area. Expect about 1.5 to 2 hours and a fare that depends on your route, so check the current price at the DAMRI counter. You may still need a short taxi or ride-hailing trip to reach your hotel.

Option 4: Ride-hailing apps

Apps like Grab and Gojek work in Yogyakarta, but airport pickup spots can be restricted. Check the pickup point inside the app before you rely on it.

So, which one should you choose?

  • Staying near Malioboro or Tugu: take the train.
  • Arriving late at night: take an airport taxi.
  • Tight budget and flexible time: take the DAMRI bus.

Or, don't rush to the city at all

Here is something most guides don't tell you: the airport sits in Kulon Progo, one of the most beautiful and least visited parts of Yogyakarta. Just beyond the airport you will find the Menoreh Hills, quiet waterfalls, wide green rice fields and village life that feels a world away from the city crowds.

If you arrive in the morning and want to unwind before the city, you can start your trip right here, on a slower, greener road. This is the area we know best, and we are happy to take you through it, with a stop for local coffee along the way.

Whichever way you choose, welcome to Yogyakarta. If you have a question about your arrival, or would like to explore Kulon Progo first, just ask.
