Yogyakarta Travel Tips for First-Timers: 15 Things to Know Before You Go

Travel Tips Published 31 October 2026 ARIEF AULIA 3

First time in Yogyakarta? Here are 15 simple tips on money, transport, clothes, food and local manners, so you can relax and enjoy your trip.

Yogyakarta is friendly, easy and full of surprises. A few small tips will make your first visit much smoother. Here are 15 things we tell our guests on day one.

The 30-second version

  • Start early. Mornings are cool and quiet.
  • Carry some cash. Small shops often do not take cards.
  • Use ride apps. The price is clear before you go.
  • Dress modestly at temples and the palace.
  • Drink bottled water.
  • Smile. It opens every door here.

Money and phone

1. Bring cash

Hotels and big restaurants take cards. Markets, food stalls and small shops usually want cash (Indonesian rupiah). ATMs are easy to find in the city.

2. Get a local SIM or eSIM

Data is cheap and fast. You will need it for maps and ride apps. You can set it up at the airport or in the city.

3. Check your plug

Indonesia uses the same plugs and voltage as most of continental Europe. UK travelers need an adapter.

Getting around

4. Use Grab or Gojek

These apps show the price before the ride. They are a simple way to avoid arguments about fares.

5. Agree on the price first

For becak (pedicabs) and traditional taxis, agree on the price before you get in.

6. Cross the road slowly and steadily

Motorbikes are everywhere. Walk at a calm, steady pace and do not stop suddenly. Riders will go around you.

Clothes and weather

7. Dress modestly for sacred places

Cover your shoulders and knees at temples, mosques and the Sultan's Palace. A light scarf or long shorts is enough.

8. Beat the heat

Sun is strong all year. Bring sunscreen, a hat and a refillable bottle. Plan outdoor sights for the morning.

Food and drink

9. Do not drink tap water

Choose bottled or filtered water. Ice in restaurants is usually made from safe water, but ask if you are unsure.

10. Try the street food

Eat where locals eat. Look for busy stalls with fresh, hot food. Gudeg, a sweet young jackfruit dish, is Yogyakarta's signature.

11. Spicy means spicy

Say "tidak pedas" (not spicy) if you prefer mild food. You can always add chili sauce at the table.

Manners and culture

12. Use your right hand

Give, receive and eat with your right hand. The left hand is considered less polite.

13. Take off your shoes

Do this when entering homes, mosques and some shops. If you see shoes at the door, take yours off too.

14. Learn three small words

  • Terima kasih: thank you
  • Matur nuwun: thank you in Javanese (locals love this)
  • Enak!: delicious!

Staying safe

15. Take normal city care

Yogyakarta is generally relaxed and welcoming. Keep your phone and wallet secure in crowds, ignore anyone saying a place is "closed today" and pushing you to go elsewhere, and take travel insurance.

One last tip

Do not try to see everything. Leave an empty hour for a coffee or a village walk. That is often the best part of the trip.
